24 to 35 Months | Phonological Awareness

Prep:聽None | Activity Time: 1鈥2 Minutes

In this game, you can use names of favorite people, pets or things to introduce the idea that the words we say are made up of different parts. Action games are always great fun and are a good way to practice phonological awareness skills.

  • None

Step 1:鈥Say a name of a family member, a pet or friend that has more than one syllable.聽

Step 2:鈥As you say the name, stomp your feet to each word part. Repeat the name and the motion two or three times and see if your child joins in. For example, if you say 鈥淢ommy鈥 or 鈥淒addy,鈥 stomp your feet two times like this:聽

Say this:鈥"Mom ... my聽 聽Mom ... my" 鈥 鈥

Do this:聽"Stomp ... stomp聽 聽Stomp ... stomp"

Say this:鈥"Dad ... dy聽 聽Dad ... dy"

Do this:聽"Stomp ... stomp聽 聽Stomp ... stomp"

Remember that it doesn鈥檛 matter how many times your child stomps or if your child says the word with you.鈥痀our goal is to create a love for words by showing your child how much fun it is to say words to a simple beat.鈥

Think of words that have more than two word parts and add a stomp for each part.鈥疐or example, you could say the word 鈥渂roccoli鈥 and stomp three times like this:

Say this:鈥"Broc ... co ... li鈥疊roc ... co ... li"

Do this:聽"Stomp ... stomp ... stomp鈥 Stomp ... stomp ... stomp"
