Letter Knowledge
Introduce the title and the author of the book. Point to the letters in the author鈥檚 name and point out the distinctive features of a few. For example, you might say:聽
鈥淒r. Seuss wrote the words in this book. Doctor starts with D. There are a lot of Ss in his name!鈥 (Point to the letters in Dr. Seuss.) 鈥淪ee? Dr. Seuss writes silly words!鈥
Oral Language
Bring attention to the pictures on the front cover and explore the different textures. Use the pictures to introduce the descriptive properties of rough/smooth, shiny/dull and dark/light. For example, you could say:聽
鈥淚 see a red fish and it looks like he鈥檚 swimming in a pond. See? The pond is shiny. The part of the cover that has words is dull. Let鈥檚 point to shiny 鈥 great! The pond is shiny. Now, let鈥檚 point to dull. That鈥檚 right, this part looks dull. Shiny (point) and dull (point). Let鈥檚 open the book and read some silly words!鈥
